POVERTY AND ILLITERACY

HUNGER

In one of the richest countries in the world, there is no reason why anyone should be going to bed hungry. According to the USDA, Ohio has the 12th highest rate of households facing food insecurity in the U.S., with 14.8% of households facing food insecurity.

FOOD WASTE

In the United States, measuring from the entire production and comsumption chain, up to 40% of all food is not consumed. This is roughly $218 billion lost a year.

ILLITERACY

Reading Is Fundamental (R.I.F) has found that in the average middle to upper class household, a 7-year-old has 25 books in their personal library. Average food-insecure child has 1 book per 300 low-income families.

ABOUT FEED & READ OHIO

Jacques Angelino, founder of Feed & Read Ohio, has been fighting hard to deliver food and books to underserved areas in Ohio. For more than 15 years, Angelino has been driving down to Athens County every Monday to deliver food to fight hunger, and books to fight illiteracy. In February 7, 2017, Feed & Read Ohio was formalized under a 501 (c)(3) and with it its work in central Ohio was started. We operate on simple principles: every person deserves dignity, food to eat and the right to literacy. Currently, Feed & Read Ohio provides food and books for 85 families every week and donates additional food to food pantries in Athens, OH, we donate backpacks full of school supplies for back-to-school, and hand out turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter every year. Consider making a donation to our organization as everything and anything goes a long way! Donations of food, children’s books, feminine hygiene products, infant & adult diapers, and dog & cat food can be made by arrangement.

JACQUES ANGELINO

FOUNDER/CEO

Jacques Angelino, a former special needs educator and nurse, has worked to serve people in his community by providing food and literature for over 15 years without the formal structure of a 501(c)(3). When asked in an August 3, 2015 article on the Columbus Dispatch about why he goes through all the trouble to help people, Angelino responded by saying, “because it’s the right thing to do. It’s that simple.” At Feed & Read Ohio, Angelino hopes that you will join him in doing the right thing.

HUNGER/FOOD WASTE

In the past three years, we have rescued/purchased and delivered 116,000 lbs. of food to communities in Linden, Whitehall, Clintonville, and rural Athens county. Poverty affects many facets of life, including access to reliable transportation. That’s why we deliver the food directly to the communities that have the greatest need and the biggest barriers to access nutritious food.

ILLITERACY

In rural Ohio, specially, using a library can be extremely difficult due to lack of accessibility. We saw this problem and tackled it by bringing the books to the children least served. Every food box we deliver is accompanied by 2 children’s books with the purpose of fostering literacy at an early age. We have delivered around 26,000 kids books over the past three years. Additionally, every August we distribute bookbags full of school supplies.

MAKE A DONATION

Help us make a difference by pitching in with a monetary or material contribution!

We have identified more people in need than we have resources to fill. That’s why we need your help and contributions toward fulfilling our mission.

Your money will be used to rescue/purchase and distribute food, as well as books, directly to the households in greatest need of these essentials.

Donations of food, children’s books, feminine hygiene products, infant & adult diapers, and dog and cat food can be made by arrangement. Please call founder Jacques Angelino at (614) 439-0245.
